South Africa name new skipper and seven uncapped players for New Zealand tour

South Africa made Neil Brand, who has never played cricket before, leader for their upcoming two-match test tour of New Zealand next month. Most of their team will be absent because they are playing in their own Twenty20 league instead.

A 14-person team has been named, and half of them have never played a test match. They will get their chance because the tour coincides with the SA20, a T20 league that was created last year by Cricket South Africa and Indian Premier League sponsors.

The team that beat India in the test on Christmas Day has all but two players still playing in the SA20 league. David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen, on the other hand, will be going to New Zealand.

Bedingham hit 50 runs on his first test match this week, which helped South Africa beat India by 32 runs.

Zubayr Hamza and Khaya Zondo are two batters who have played in tests before. So have Duanne Olivier and Dane Paterson, two pacers, and Dane Piedt, a spinner.

An earlier match this month saw Brand lead South Africa A to a 2-1 win over West Indies A.

Even though the team didn’t have much practice, coach Shukri Conrad was sure that South Africa would be able to compete.

In a statement announcing the team, he said, “The players chosen for this tour have every chance of challenging New Zealand, and we have full confidence that they will do exactly that when we arrive at Mount Maunganui for the first test match.
