Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct next Star Wars film

Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is transitioning from the Marvel universe to the Star Wars universe to direct a new film set 15 years after the events of the previous film.

Sharmeen’s film would be one of three new Star Wars films announced by the studio executives on Friday.

She will direct British actress Daisy Ridley in a story written by Steven Knight, in which she will reprise her role as Rey, the heroine of the previous trilogy, which concluded in 2019 to mixed reviews.

The new film will follow Rey’s efforts to bring the Jedi Order back to life.

Obaid-Chinoy, who has two Oscars for documentaries about women’s violence, said she was “drawn to the hero’s journey” in the Star Wars universe.

“I’ve spent the better part of my life meeting real heroes who are overcoming oppressive regimes and battling impossible odds,” she said.

Ms. Marvel, a television series starring a Muslim superhero, was directed by Obaid-Chinoy last year.

The filmmaker received two Academy Awards for documentary shorts: Saving Face in 2011 and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness in 2015.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, the studio purchased by Disney in 2012, stated at the Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday that the three films would cover different eras in the Star Wars story. And each will be directed by a different person.

James Mangold, a two-time Oscar nominee, will direct another of the films after directing the latest installment in the Indiana Jones series, which will be released later this year.

His film will delve into the origins of the Jedi Order thousands of years before the original plot.

And the third film will be directed by Dave Filoni, a veteran of the Star Wars universe who has produced several television series, including the wildly successful The Mandalorian, which is currently in its third season.

Fans at the convention also got their first look at US actress Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, a female Jedi warrior who first appeared in an animated series.
