LAHORE:

The comment made by PML-Q leader Chaudhry Moonis Elahi regarding the “advice” of former army head General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa has raised questions about the army’s claim to be “apolitical,” according to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, who demanded an explanation on Saturday.

In a significant disclosure on Friday, Moonis asserted that (ret) Gen Bajwa’s recommendation to support former prime minister Imran Khan at the time of the no-confidence motion against him had a bearing on the PML-choice Q’s to support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

In response to Elahi’s assertion, Sanaullah told the media in Lahore that the previous army commander had upheld the institution’s official line to the public that it had no ties to politics.

“After serving his whole tenure, Gen. Bajwa has retired. Both his gains and losses are irrelevant. Now that Moonis Elahi’s claim has called into question the institution’s story, it has to be explained “added the minister.

Sanaullah said that the public and the administration have faith that the promises given to the country by the military leadership and institutions are “genuine” and “respectable.”

According to him, the institution would carry out its responsibilities in the service of the nation under the same dedication in order for politics to develop and circumstances to improve for the benefit of the nation.
