PM Shahbaz Sharif calls for same-day elections

LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has maintained his commitment to holding same-day elections across the country.

PM Shehbz Sharif told the media in London after meeting PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif that legislation was the right of Parliament and that all institutions should function within the parameters set by the constitution.

PM Shehbaz Sharif stated that the entire nation agreed on holding elections on the same day and that for the sake of the people and the country, the system should be administered in accordance with the Constitution.

The prime minister stated that Nawaz Sharif is optimistic and will return to Pakistan shortly. The younger Sharif is currently in London to represent Pakistan at King Charles-III’s coronation ceremony.

Earlier, the Senate of Pakistan overwhelmingly approved holding simultaneous elections in the National and four provincial assemblies.

In its April 4 decision, the Supreme Court directed the finance ministry to provide Rs21 billion to the poll Commission of Pakistan for the Punjab poll.

Senator Tahir Bizenjo introduced the resolution during a Senate session presided over by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.
