Petition filed in LHC for restoration of Punjab assembly

LAHORE: A plea for the restoration of the Punjab Assembly has been filed in the Lahore High Court.

According to the petition, the advice to dissolve the Punjab Assembly was unlawful because it did not disclose the reasons for dissolving the assembly.

A citizen’s petition further alleged that the advice was given on the orders of a former prime minister and that the court can consider such counsel.

The court has the authority to declare the advice unconstitutional and restore the Assembly.

Earlier, the Punjab Assembly was lawfully dissolved after Punjab Governor Baligh ur Rehman excused himself from signing the summary, stating that he could not participate in the process.

The summary of dissolution was forwarded by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi, and according to the Constitution, the parliament dissolves within 48 hours regardless of the governor’s decision.

It is worth noting that PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi indicated that talks with the PDM government had failed and that the Supreme Court had been notified of the circumstances.

The Supreme Court recommended that all political parties meet and agree on a date for the elections.
