Avatar: The Way of Water continued to dominate the box office rankings this weekend, with an estimated $15.7 million in North American theatres, making it the fourth-highest global grosser of all time.
The Disney/20th Century Fox sci-fi film, directed by James Cameron, “has been #1 for 7 straight weeks… a milestone that hasn’t been accomplished” since Cameron released the original Avatar in 2009.

1. AVATAR 2 ($15M)
2. PUSS IN BOOTS 2 ($10M)
3. A MAN CALLED OTTO ($6.7M)
4. M3GAN ($6.3M)
5. PATHAAN ($5.9M)
Great holds across the board this weekend–no film in the TOP 10 dropping more than -38%.
Hefty returns from theatres all over the world, including $237 million in ticket sales in China, helped propel “The Way of Water” to fourth place all-time at $2.117 billion, unadjusted for inflation.
Cameron now has his name on three of the top four grossing films of all time: the original Avatar, Titanic, and The Way of Water (Avengers: Endgame from Disney and Marvel sneaks in at second).
Universal’s family-friendly Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came in second place for the North American weekend, grossing $10.6 million from Friday to Sunday.
Sony’s feel-good A Man Called Otto came in third, up two slots from the previous weekend, with $6.8 million. In this dramatization of the Swedish classic A Man Called Ove, Tom Hanks plays the title curmudgeon.
M3GAN, a scary-doll thriller from Universal and Blumhouse Productions, got fourth place with $6.4 million. It contains an android doll that was built as a companion for a young orphan and is gradually becoming creepier.
Pathaan, the new action thriller from Yash Raj Films, came in fifth place with $5.9 million, an impressive North American total for a Hindi-language film. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, dubbed the “King of Bollywood,” in a narrative involving spies, renegade agents, and a lethal lab-created virus.
