NA passes resolution to utilize dam fund for flood affectees

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Friday to use the funds deposited in the Supreme Court of Pakistan Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Fund for flood relief.

Kesoo Mal Kheeal Das proposed the motion, claiming that the then-chief justice, Saqib Nisar, illegally formed a dam fund on July 10, 2018, in violation of judiciary tradition, for the construction of water reservoirs and dams.

According to the resolution, a five-member bench led by the current chief justice was informed that Rs16.53 billion had been put into the dam fund thus far.

It predicted that the deposited fund would reach Rs16.98 billion in the following quarter.

However, the resolution required that the deposited funds be transferred to the national exchequer and that the funds be used to rehabilitate flood victims in 2022.

Later, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the NAB Ordinance 1999 Amendment Bill 2023, which was unanimously approved by the NA.

Furthermore, the NA unanimously approved an amendment bill to review SC rulings under Article 184 review petitions.
