MQM-P’s Rana Ansar elected new opposition leader in Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MPA Rana Ansar was voted Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly on Wednesday, replacing PTI’s Haleem Adil Shaikh.

Rana Ansar received 39 votes from 69 opposition members, including 20 MQM-P members, 10 GDA members, and nine PTI dissidents.

While congratulating the new opposition leader, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said, “You are the first woman elected as the leader of this house.”

The new opposition leader expressed gratitude to the party and the Speaker of the Sindh Assembly. “A woman feels Sindh’s agony.” “The people of Sindh elected me to this house because we needed water, gas, and infrastructure,” she explained.

The MQM-P had asked the provincial legislature to alter the opposition leader in the house and had chosen Rana Ansar for the job.

After obtaining the parliamentarians’ signatures, the MQM-P lawmakers submitted her candidacy to the Sindh Assembly Secretariat. Farooq Sattar, Nasreen Jalil, Rana Ansar, and others from the MQM-P filed the application with the PA Secretariat.

Farooq Sattar told journalists that the opposition leader and several members from his party were not attending the provincial parliament. He remarked that there is a need to fill this vacancy in the Sindh Assembly to represent the opposition benches.

According to Farooq Sattar, the Leader of the House and the Opposition Leader must make a decision on the temporary chief minister. He further stated that the MQM-P has complete faith in Rana Ansar, the party’s parliamentary leader.
