Govt rules out involvement in nomination process as polls preparation enters third phase

Murtaza Solangi, who is currently the caretaker Federal Minister of Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs, said that the government had nothing to do with whether or not candidate papers were approved before the general elections on February 8, 2019.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) turned down the nomination papers of several well-known politicians, including top leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This led to Solangi’s remarks.

Radio Pakistan reported that the temporary information minister said that approving or rejecting candidate nominations is a constitutional process and that all decisions must be made within the law.

Solangi made it clear what the caretaker government’s stance is by saying that the caretaker government has nothing to do with the nomination process and that the ECP is in charge of all voting matters.

He also made it clear that all registered political parties, including the PTI, got fair and balanced coverage from the media because of the state media’s ethical editorial practices.

Solangi said again that the caretaker government would give the ECP all the financial and administrative help it needs to hold general elections.

He said that the electoral body’s original financial needs were met with a gift of Rs10 billion, and then another Rs17.4 billion was given to them.

The PTI, which used to be in power, said that almost 90% of the nomination papers of its top leaders, including Imran Khan, were turned down, while all of the other parties’ election papers were accepted.

As early as the first round of elections, ROs, cops, caretakers, and the ECP all helped Nawaz Sharif. There should be no shame in putting the futures of 250 million people at risk just to help Nawaz Sharif, the party said on its official account X, which used to be Twitter.
