
ISLAMABAD: The government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold talks in the upper house of parliament today (Thursday) at 6 p.m.
According to sources, negotiations between the ruling alliance and the PTI to hold elections across the country on the same date will begin this evening at 6 p.m. at the Senate.
PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Fawad Chaudhry, and Senator Ali Zafar will represent the party in the discussions, while the ruling alliance has yet to form a negotiating team.
According to sources, JUI-F, a crucial coalition government alliance, will not participate in discussions with the opposition.
Sanjrani will chair a parliamentary committee
Earlier in the day, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani announced the formation of a 10-member parliamentary committee to discuss holding elections on the same day across the country.
The Senate chairman has urged Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and PTI senator Shehzad Waseem, in a letter, to provide four names for the formation of a committee to solve the prevailing political and economic crisis, including the convening of general elections.
“As a stabilizing factor of the federation, the Senate of Pakistan; House of Federation is constitutionally bestowed with the responsibility of protecting national and political harmony vis-Ã -vis the national and public interest,” he wrote.
Sanjrani further stated that a 10-member special group for political discussion is being formed under the combined convenership of the Leader of the House in the Senate and the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, with four members from each of the treasury and opposition benches.
PTI forms three-person committee
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan formed a three-member negotiating committee with the government on Thursday.
PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Fawad Chaudhry, and Senator Ali Zafar served on the committee. The committee will negotiate with the administration to hold national elections on the same day.
The move comes after federal ministers and PML-N leaders Azam Nazeer Tarar and Saad Rafique contacted Senate Chairman for negotiations with the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) yesterday.
The ministers recommended forming five-member opposition and government committees from the upper house of Parliament. According to insiders, they also wanted a meeting room in Parliament House.
