ISLAMABAD: The federal government of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has opened communication and dialogues to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the first time since coming into the power, sources told the private media group.

Meeting of Ishaq Dar and Arif Alvi

The change occurred when President Arif Alvi and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar met on Friday to discuss political concerns. According to the sources, the president assured him that the PTI leadership would get his message.

The sources continued that in response to the government’s invitation, the PTI leadership also demonstrated its willingness and gave the president permission to speak with the government.

Dar’s Twice meeting with Arif Alvi in the last three days

“The PTI wants the date for the early general elections to be announced. The PTI is eager to re-join parliament to have a discussion on the electoral system if the government agrees. Additionally, it is said that the meeting between the president and the finance minister served to secure a smooth conclusion to the selection of the new army chief.

President can withhold the summary of appointment of New Army Chief

According to the legislation, the president has 25 days to withhold the summary of the army chief’s nomination that the prime minister delivered to him. However, according to the sources, the selection of an army leader is a very delicate affair, and postponing the appointment will not serve the interests of the country.

New army chief’s appointment is not the concern of PTI

The president may hold the summary for reconsideration if the government names an army commander in contravention of the established procedure, a PTI leader told private media. But he added that the party would not object to the choice of any general to serve as army chief. Now, the incoming chief’s appointment is not a PTI concern, he continued.

The nomination of the new army chief

According to reliable sources, the defense ministry has yet to start the summary process for the nomination of the chief of army staff (COAS). According to one source, the summary may begin at any time in the following 36 hours, but if it is delayed any longer, the federal cabinet may be used by the government to approve the appointment of the new army chief.

Civil and Military dispute on the next army chief’s appointment

The news about disagreements between the civil and military leadership on the subject was, however, refuted by a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He declared that the choice had already been chosen and that it will be announced the following week. In the meantime, former president Asif Ali Zardari and PDM leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman were consulted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

President will be accountable of the consequences: Bilawal

On the other hand, the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, has cautioned the president that he will be held accountable if a mess is made throughout the process.

PDM govt wants to keep things running smoothly

Legal experts predicted that the issue might be brought before the Supreme Court on the grounds that the chief’s nomination process was not carried out in accordance with the predetermined procedure. Political commentators have predicted that the incoming COAS will face numerous difficulties, including the deteriorating economic conditions brought on by political instability and Imran Khan’s anti-establishment rhetoric. While the PDM govt wants to keep things running smoothly until next September, the PTI expects the incoming army leader to ensure early general elections.
