RAWALPINDI: General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the outgoing army leader, formally handed the reins over to General Asim Munir, the country’s 17th chief of the army staff (COAS), at a ceremony on Tuesday at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

Senior civil and military officers, as well as chiefs from every branch of the armed services, attended the event. Ministers, ambassadors, dignitaries, and media from the federal government were also invited to the ceremony.

General Bajwa and General Munir placed a wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada before the event.

After considerable anticipation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif named General Munir as the next army chief on November 24. He was the most senior-ranked general after General Bajwa.

Since Pakistan’s independence, General Munir is the 17th army chief to be in charge of the army.

The recently appointed military commander formerly held positions in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence, the two most significant intelligence organizations in the nation (MI).
