Firdous Ashiq Awan quits PTI over May 9 violence

ISLAMABAD: The nightmare for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) continues, as Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, former special assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) Imran Khan on Information and Broadcasting, announced his resignation on Friday.

Firdous Ashiq Awan, speaking at the Islamabad Press Club, harshly condemned the attacks on military sites and demanded strict action against those involved in the disturbances.

The former SAPM stated that he entered politics to further a national cause and that the state is more holy than politics. Ms. Awan said that May 9 scheme was developed from Zaman Park to make the ‘foreign handlers’ happy.

Pakistan and Imran Khan cannot coexist, she adds.

Firdous Ashiq Awan slammed the former prime minister and PTI head, saying Imran Khan ‘uses’ people for personal advantage.

She stated that she will remain involved in politics and will not let his electoral constituency down.

Earlier that day, Salman Ahmad, a close adviser to former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan, condemned the May 9 violence.

Salman Ahmad stated that the events on May 9, following Imran Khan’s arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case by the NAB, had affected him. He also asked that individuals implicated in the May 9 mayhem face legal consequences.

Over a dozen PTI leaders, employees, and ticket holders have left the party after vehemently criticizing the May 9 vandalism, in which rioters set fire to military sites, and public and private buildings, and caused millions of rupees in damage.

Mussarat Cheema, Secretary Information Punjab for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and her husband Jamshed Iqbal Cheema resigned from the party and politics earlier that night.
