
KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has requested security for local government (LG) polls in 24 districts of Sindh on May 7L.
According to information, the electoral watchdog has written to Sindh Inspector-General of Police (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon, requesting security for local government (LG) elections in the province’s 24 districts.
In the letter, ECP stated that LG elections would be held on May 7, and requested that the provincial police chief provide protection at polling stations.
“Strict security arrangements should be made in light of Karachi’s deteriorating law and order situation,” the letter read.
Previously, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed local government (LG) by-elections in 24 Sindh districts.
According to a notification, the electoral watchdog postponed the local government (LG) by-elections due to the last Ashra of the Holy Month of Ramazan, as requested by several political parties.
“Under Article 218(3) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Constitution, read with Sections-58 and 229 of the Elections Act. 2017, and all other powers enabling it in that behalf, the Election Commission of Pakistan is pleased to postpone the Local Government Bye-Elections of 1 & 2 phases in 26 districts of Sindh Province,” the notification stated.
