Brazil says goodbye to late football great Zagallo

Brazilians paid their respects to football legend Mario Zagallo on Sunday. The 92-year-old died after a long illness. He was the last member of one of the best football groups in the country’s history.

People who were sad were wearing black, the yellow of the Brazilian national team, or the colours of the many clubs where Zagallo played and coached. They walked past his coffin at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which had a big banner in his honour on the front.

Near the coffin draped in lace were Brazil’s record five World Cup titles, which show how much the country loved football. Zagallo, a small left winger who was famous for being very smart with strategy, helped win four of them, which is more than anyone else in football history.

Then he led the world-champion team in 1970, which included Pele and is seen by many as the best team in history. In 1994, he was an assistant coach when the “Selecao” did it again. “We’ve lost a sports legend,” Bebeto, who was on the 1994 team, said.

“He was my second father,” he told reporters, and Cafu, another World Cup winner (1994 and 2002), said the same thing. Former Brazil coach Tite and CBF head Ednaldo Rodrigues were also there to pay their respects. Rodrigues gave Mario Cesar Zagallo an emotional hug.

“Just one Zagallo”

Claudio Auvarenga, a driver who is 64 years old, got there early so he could be one of the first people to walk past the body. “No matter where you go, there is only one Zagallo.” “No one else has ever won four World Cups,” he told AFP. Eliana Gaia, 66, who worked for Zagallo for a long time, called him a “human being without equal.”

“He was a magnificent person, a hero,” she stated. Following a public wake and a private mass, Zagallo’s body was placed on top of a bright red fire truck and led through the streets of Rio de Janeiro while a small group of fans cheered and clapped.
